This stop offers a fascinating trip back in time to Tasmania's convict past, soak up the amazing architecture of literally dozens of Georgian buildings.
The bridge that spans the Coal Valley River is the oldest in Australia but high expectation of coal in Richmond never eventuated.
Richmond was originally a penal settlement for transportation of prisoners and soldiers that moved between Hobart and the peninsula. Richmond soon built a gaol, watch house, magistrate courthouse and almost immediately Richmond started to become a settlement.
Richmond soon added flour mills, post office, hotels and churches; St John's church is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Australia.
A highlight of any visit to Richmond is the gaol. This historic gaol displays relics and documents from it's earliest years and once housed famous inmates such as bush-ranger Martin Cash and 'Ikey Soloman' a London pawnbroker who was the model for Fagin in Oliver Twist. All areas of the gaol are accessible, feel free to experience being locked in to a convict solitary cell... If you dare!
